Public Records

Public RecordsPublic records hold an incredible amount of information that is helpful to home buyers. If you take advantage of all of these public resources, most of which are absolutely free, you may end up feeling like a detective tracking down the clues but that is exactly what it is.... tracking down the clues. Look at all the places to visit and get information about your new home or town:

Deeds and mortgages and liens are recorded and available for public viewing at the Registry of Deeds. Plot plans and neighborhood plans and tax records and assessor's field cards with pertinent data about homes are available for the public to see (and get copies at nominal fees) at the town and city halls. The Sex Offender Registry has information about the higher risk categories of offenders. The data are available for citizens who can prove they have a legitimate reason for asking the police department. Environmental hazards data is available in a number of places including the government web sites (public records) and through some private services as well. Crime statistics are part of the public records but are made available through private services that set up the databases in an easy to use fashion.
